...I've been reading a lot about this problem and it seems to be an epidemic. It seems that when the PRAM (Backup) Battery - not the main lithium battery- in the machine dies, it prevents the unit from starting up. In KB Article 86181 "Macintosh Family: Batteries and Part Numbers, Part 2" Apple has set the PRAM battery's life span at about 5 years average.
...There have been some people (including myself) who have sought to get the battery replaced, but were not willing to pay the $80-$100 to get the Apple Service Centers to replace the battery. The center here in Hawaii refused to sell just the battery as it is considered a service part and their labor was over half the cost.
...This little battery is comprised of 4 3v rechargeable lithium button cells and is located in the unit under the DVD drive (adhered to the underside of the palm rest). I've read one case where the battery was temporarily replaced with AAs and the unit worked fine. Personally, I will be looking into a more permanent solution by reconstructing the battery with rechargeable cells from Radio Shack. I will post my results when the "surgery" is complete...
...I hope this information helps!
