The next minor update to OS X 10.1 is almost ready to go final candidate — but there’s one hiccup: Microsoft wants a different release schedule than Apple’s. Basically, as it stands right now, OS X 10.1.5 could be ready for download within two weeks, and one of the major new features is Quartz text rendering in Carbon applications (developers can update their apps to display smooth text as seen in Cocoa apps and all over OS X).
Obviously, Internet Explorer will be updated, but Microsoft doesn’t want to release an update so quickly — in fact, they’d rather hold-off on releasing the next version of Explorer until they release the new Office v10 update in June. Along with that, they were hoping to have the 10.1.5 release and the new IE release simultaneously, but now no one (except Steve, I guess) knows what will happen for sure.
All that to say, the grapevine knows 10.1.5 can be ready by the first of the month. Microsoft wants Apple to wait on releasing it until Explorer is ready, which won´t be for another seven weeks or so — unless they skimp on some of the planned updates.
Who will win this little skirmish? We’ll just have to wait and see…
