Ny server: Xserve! *LIVE*

Tråden skapades och har fått 31 svar. Det senaste inlägget skrevs .

LIVE från Cupertino, tack vare Maccentral.com.

Den heter Xserve och är en 1U-serverlösning.

Specifikationerna är:

The server will have dual 1GHz G4 processors, 256K L2, 4MB DDR L3 caches.

System controller with custom ASIC done by Apple.
Built-in: Gigabit Ethernet and FireWire. That controller has up to 2GB DDR SDRAM. (This is the first time that we know of that that SDRAM has been used in a 1U server.)

In addition, it will have a PCI slot with gigabit Ethernet. This means server comes std. with two gigabit Ethernet ports. Quad ATA/100 drives, all on independent controllers and all have independent channels into system controller; a CD-ROM and 2 64-bit/66MHz PCI slots.

Storage: 60GB and 120GB ATA/100 drives. (We support 4 drive bays, so that means 480GB max in a 1U server.)

"We´re going with ATA because they´re just as fast as SCSI and they offer real benefits in term of largest capacities."

We also have hardware monitoring, where we try to alert you to what needs service. We monitor drive status and pre-fail, temperature (processor and enclosure), fans, power supply and network link.

Pricing & Availability starts at $2999 for two standard models: 1GHz dual 256MB DDR and a 60GB hard disk for $2999 -- 1GHz dual 512 MB DDR with a 60GB for $3999. But most people aren´t going to buy a standard configuration -- they´ll configure it themselves on the Apple store.

Compare this to the competitors:

* Dell PowerEdge 1560 $4277 - 3 bays
* IBM eServer X330 $5186 - 3 bays
* Sun Fire 280R $19590 - 2 bays
* Xserve $3999 - 266MHz DDR SDRAM, 4 bays means more total capacity

Verkar ganska ok.

Helt ok pris faktiskt!
Verkar vara en snygg lösning på övervakningen. Det här har jag väntat länge på.

Mjukvara:

(klippa och klistra)

"Edit Notifications" button lets you be warned, via e-mail or page, if something goes wrong with the server. It can be configured for single servers, or a whole groups of servers.

Server Monitor demo: We see a list of all running Xserves on a local network, with a series of green "lights" showing server status. Green buttons refer to current status of the drives (all four bays), power, network connections (2 built-in and any others you add), fans (both of them) and software lock. Clicking on the green buttons shows you info about status of those parts of the server.

Begin demo of Xserve and OS X Server

New software: Server Monitor -- this is how you manage the hardware.

OS X Server and Xserve provide a completely headless operation, SMP optimization, UPS support, 2-terabyte file system support, Net-SNMP and MIB II, for OS X clients. Management tools include Server Admin and Server Monitor, Unlimited clients (windows server requires expensive server licenses).

Mac OS X server also includes Mac Manager 2, NetBoot, NetInfo, LDAP connectivity, Server Admin via SSH

Internet and security: BSD, IP firewall, DHCP, DNS, SLP.

Internet and Web services: Apache, QuickTime Streaming, WebObjects, Mail (SMTP, POP, IMAP), WebDAV, SSL, PHP, MySQL, Java, CGI, Caching Web Proxy.

File and print services: Mac (AFP), Windows (Samba, SMB/CIFS), Unix and Linux (NFS), Internet (FTP, WebDAV), LPR/LPD and SMB/CIFS printing.

Tack, haha! Kollade det, och läste ´dual´ på båda.
Nu läste jag dock rätt.

Men inget RAID-5 och inget SCSI???

Hoppas det finns som BTO

Apple Introduces Xserve 1U Rack-Mount Server

New Server Delivers Multiprocessing, Large Storage & Fast Networking

CUPERTINO, Calif., May 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple® (Nasdaq: AAPL - News) today introduced Xserve(TM), a powerful 1U rack-mount server designed with Apple´s legendary ease-of-use for groundbreakingly simple set up and remote management. Designed from the ground up as the perfect complement to Apple´s UNIX-based Mac® OS X Server software, Xserve is ideal for business and education customers.

Xserve provides exceptional performance in a compact 1U rack-mount server. Its dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4 processors each have 2MB of Double Data Rate (DDR) L3 cache, and Xserve is the first 1U server to use DDR SDRAM memory with up to 2GB capacity. Xserve offers best-in-class storage, with up to 480GB on four hot-plug ATA/100 drives, and best-in-class networking with standard dual Gigabit Ethernet ports. Xserve includes an unlimited user license to Mac OS X Server software, offering users a perfect combination for file/print service, video streaming, database applications, computational clustering and web and mail serving.

"Xserve is the result of listening to our customers," said Steve Jobs, Apple´s CEO. "Xserve is super easy to set up, and is easily integrated into existing networks. Plus, with its unlimited-user software license at no extra cost, Xserve is a tremendously cost effective server with real UNIX under the hood."

"We saw Xserve and were blown away. We are adding 40 new servers before the end of the year, and Xserve is perfect for our outdoor creative and media production needs," said Joe Shannon, Clear Channel Worldwide´s CTO. "As the global leader in outdoor advertising, radio broadcasting and live entertainment, Clear Channel will be using Xserve to satisfy our demanding network requirements."

"Apple´s powerful new Xserve rack-mount workgroup server solution combined with Apple´s UNIX-based Mac OS X Server software is a superior platform for Oracle9i Database," said Michael Rocha, senior vice president, Product Services and Platform Technologies, Oracle Corp. "Oracle´s leading database clustering technology, Oracle9i Real Application Clusters, running on Xserve will deliver enterprise-class solutions to our joint customers and create new opportunities for both companies."

Xserve is perfect for I/O intensive applications such as digital video, high-resolution digital imagery and large scientific datasets. * software RAID mirroring for protection of important data and RAID striping for additional performance;
* a VGA graphics card that supports headless booting and enables easy connectivity to industry standard cross-platform devices;
* an optional AGP 4X graphics card to connect displays, keyboards and a mouse for "Mac-in-a-rack" solutions;
* three 400Mbps FireWire® ports with two accessible on the back panel and one on the front panel for quick access;
* two USB ports, one DB-9 serial console port and an optional Ultra3 SCSI card for connecting to external storage and backup devices;
* an optional fiber Gigabit Ethernet adapter;
* Mac OS X Server software featuring QuickTime® Streaming Server, WebObjects and the latest advancements from the Open Source community such as Apache, Samba, PHP, MySQL and Tomcat; and
